Salt & Straw - Studio City

Salt & Straw - Studio City

I've met a lot of people in my life. It's really rare to find people who are really passionate with what they do. After meeting Tyler, who we called the Chief Churner Officer (any many other names), we feel that Salt & Straw represents the real passion chasers out there. Tyler was literally traveling in Beijing when he realized where his heart belonged. To be on the literal scale, he packed his bags from Seattle and headed to Portland to attend culinary school.

It was also a coincidence that his cousin Kim, who is also the founder of Salt & Straw, was then pursuing her dreams of opening an ice cream scoop shop. It took no time before these 2 masters collaborated and worked out something more than delicious flavors of ice cream, but really developed a story into what they do.

I felt extremely privileged to have met Tyler. He was smart, funny, and wickedly genius with his flavor combinations. I would say he's like the Willy Wonka of ice cream. It's amazing how Salt & Straw which was originally from Portland, has made their trademark in Los Angeles with little to no effort at all. They love what they do. And I can honestly say it comes through with their product. Not only are they artisans with their ice creams, but they also incorporate local business ingredients into their creations. An example is their "May Flowers" flavor. One of the creations was called Wild Honey with Ricotta Walnut Lace Cookies. The honey that was used was from  Massey Honey Co, a local Los Angeles/ Orange County apiary where the honey is extracted by hand and strained.

We've tried most if not all of their flavors. Everything we had was delicious. Perfect. And executed without flaws like a perfect round on Chopped. A few of my favorites Stumptown Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts, Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbon, Freckled Woodblock Chocolate, Rhubarb Crumble with toasted anise (May Flower special), Wild Honey with Ricotta Walnut Lace Cookies, and Black Olive Brittle & Goat cheese if you are a HUGE goat cheese fan. These are some of the favorites to name a few.

This here was my favorite combination. Tyler randomly scooped these for us without knowing. Sea Salt with caramel ribbons on the bottom and Stumptown Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts on top. There's no other way to describe it besides DELICIOUS and Decadent.

Studio City is their newest location that just opened recently. I highly recommend you check it out. Easy parking with tons of friendly patrons. I'm hooked. You just might see me there.

**Stay tuned. They will be opening up another location in the Arts District in DTLA**

Napa Valley Grille

Napa Valley Grille

After closing down 3 months for a renovation costing a little over $2 million dollars, Napa Valley Grille in Westwood is now reopened. I've never seen the restaurant before the renovations, but as I walked by, I told myself "Wow! This restaurant is beautiful." John reminds me "We are eating here today..."... I wasn't embarrassed but I can't believe that just happened. The restaurant has valet if you prefer, but there's also meter parking available on the streets.

1100 Glendon Avenue, #100 Los Angeles, CA 90024

The restaurant is nothing short of its name. Right when you walk in, you first notice the bar filled with liquor. Then, the beautiful vaulted ceilings with arches and wood beams throughout the warm dining room. As you walk by, the elegant display of wines waiting to be drunk.

Our server Jaryl was great, friendly, and attentive throughout the whole course of our meal.

We started our dinner with 2 appetizers.

Oven Roasted Mussels

Prepared with crispy pancetta, sweet onions, charred tomato, and Tavistock Reserve Chardonnay. The broth was to die for. The Chardonnay was perfectly cooked out leaving a subtle sweetness that marries great with all the ingredients. I also love the utilization of fresh herbs. Must order.

Wagyu Meatballs

Wagyu Beef, pancetta, fried green tomato, fresh herbs, and romesco sauce. This was excellent. The sharpness of the green tomato complimented the beef and pancetta. I'll be happy eating this everyday.

Complimentary House Pickles.

Love the simplicity of the pickling. I would buy this in a jar if sold in markets.

Branzino

I am a huge fan of branzino. I love the meatiness and slight sweetness of the fish. Deboned, and cooked with capers, tomato, Romanesco, olive oil, parsley and other fresh herbs. Not show in the photo are a few slices of peeled limes. The fish was stunning and tasted better than it looked. The flavors were simple, but the execution was flawless. This tasted like Spring leaping towards summer. Another must order.

House-Made Lobster Ravioli

The Lobster ravioli was served with this shrimp, chervil and watermelon salad. Interesting concept, but the flavors worked in this dish. The ingredients were fresh with the play of herbs again. Another leap towards summer with this one.

I am not much of a fan of sweet items, but there are things I can never pass up.

Cast-Iron Baked Cookie

It's not just a baked cookie. It's a baked cookie served with pecan nougatine and salted caramel ice cream. A great cookie with a creamy ice cream. I'm a huge fan of salted caramel ice cream. This does not disappoint.

Butterscotch Bread Pudding

You have absolutely no idea how delicious this was! The bread pudding was made with brioche, brown sugar sauce, and brûléed marshmallows. Super rich. Super decadent. But high comforting and highly contagious. You can't just have one bite. These were definitely the top desserts on their menu.

Cappuccino

Don't forget to pair your desserts with an espresso.

Their Executive Cef Adrian Vela incorporated a lot of fresh ingredients from the local Farmers Market in Santa Monica. Every dish was vibrant with flavor, plated rustically but with elegance.

Great for any occasion with plenty of space and a few private rooms.

Chelo Creamery

I've only seen rolled ice cream in videos and thought how fun and somewhat genius it was. The mixture is basically in liquid form, poured onto a cold stone with the toppings, crushed and mixed up, until it starts forming a paste. The paste is then spread and flatted all around the stone, until it's solid enough to scrape and roll.

I got an invite from @damoneats for the new rolled ice cream served at Chelo Creamery. It was another special event where all foodies and LA lifestyle media individuals, gather to take endless photos of their food. Being a small ice cream shop (in terms of space), it got packed, quick.

With only 2 surfaces for them to mash and roll, I waited 1 hour, before I received my rolled up ice cream. Now, being that I'm a little lactose intolerant, will I wait 1 hour to get this again? Probably not. But, was it good? Absolutely. I would wait 15-20 minutes max, but anything over for ice cream can make me feel a little defeated. And waiting an hour, would give me the guilt trip that I do not want. That the rolls, might actually turn my stomach into rolls. And then, I would need to eat a salad for dinner. And that can't happen. No.. it just can't.

I ordered their salted caramel ice cream. It was very creamy, not too sweet, and a perfectly balanced touch of salt. Salted caramel is always my go to. Always. I would definitely order this again along with the strawberry cheesecake that looked fantastic. They also carried gelato, and I believe ice cream waffles (looked great I gained 10 pounds).

Located:

18558 Gale Ave. #158 Rowland Heights, CA 91748

Make sure to check them out tomorrow, Sunday 11/15/2015 to try some rolled ice cream.

By the way, I also want to come back for their durian. Yes. One of my favorite things. Stinky sweet onion flavor, what's not to love.

Happy rolling.
