Luna Grill

Your day just got Feta! Had Luna Grill's Beyond Burger. Yup you guess right. A beefless meat patty that is 100% pant based. How cool is that? Or scary. Whatever floats your boat. I'm a little with both. Cool that we've come a long way for veggie patties and scary to know people are actually trying to mock the flavor and texture of beef. Even the looks of a medium/medium rare exists in these Beyond Meat patties.

The verdict? The texture was pretty spot on. It didn't have the fat you would imagine a fatty chuck would have. It didn't have the same fat crust you would normally get. However, did I miss a burger while eating this? No. It actually satisfied my craving for a burger so it did it's job. This is a great alternative if you want to cut out meat, but still enjoy a burger that has a better substance than one made with beans.

They also sell this in Ralphs. I'm excited to eat this again to be honest.

Breakfast - Tokyo

Found a random restaurant to eat at while surfing around Tokyo Station. This place is huge if you've ever been. Not sure the name of this restaurant, but it's close to the North Gate of Tokyo Station. It's on the main level, not downstairs where the restaurant rows are.

I eat soba here like no other. It's so common to find like any other noodle dish. It's just so comfortable to dip the noodles in tsuyu mixed with wasabi and green onions. This is one of those dishes that disappears. It's common during a meal that people don't really talk. Since everyone is in a hurry, all you hear is slurping. This goes down quick. Before you know it, your plate is empty.

Chicken Katsu with curry udon. Perfectly fried katsu in a rich luscious curry broth. Udon noodles were perfectly al dente. Slivers of onions are topped to cut the richness.

Combinations come with sushi. Here you have bonito, aji, and tamago. Flavors are very traditional. If you've had bonito, you can imagine the flavor to be very rich in fishiness with a meatlike aftertaste. The aji itself has a slight brine with the typical grated ginger to mellow it out. I eat the tamago at the end for sweetness.

I ate this kind of stuff a lot. I do wish we had more restaurants like this, within reach, which caters a lot to the "Salaryman". What a treat this was.

Explore your way. As zimmern would say "If it looks good, eat it".

Kotohira Restaurant

Kotohira Restaurant

I'm not in this area often, but was attending an audiophile event in the area. What I love about traveling a few 10-30 miles outside of my neighborhood is that it really pushed me to find a new restaurant to try. Being at the event, walking up and down stairs, visiting rooms by rooms filled with amazing HiFi can really stir up an appetite. It can also make me very hangry.

What sucks about being a nowaday foodie is no matter what, you are in charge of picking a place. Even if that baton has passed... it always comes back.

Kotohira was discovered by the love Yelp app. I'm not a fan of the reviews people leave, but I use it just to know what there is around me. I've been to this plaza before where Kotohira is located. I've eaten at Furaibo a few times mainly for their tebasaki karaage.

I wanted something warm, hearty, and comforting. Kotohira was a perfect choice. It had the traditional Japanese lunch combos available with sizeable bowls that will make you take a nap. Here are a few things I was able to snap.

Side udon that comes with a combo. Slurp away.

Pan fried gyoza. Dip this in a mixture of vinegar and hot chili oil.

Chicken Karaage. Another one of my favorite dishes as mentioned before somewhere in this blog. I love extra lemons. I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Bento combination with tuna sashimi, chicken karaage, grilled saba, tempura, and Japanese root vegetable. When I went to Japan a few years ago, I ate a lot of combinations like this. It's really comforting and brings back a nostalgic memory.

Hikari - Torrance CA

Just laying it out there that this was the best tasting Yakiniku I've ever had. I guess this place used to be something else. If you ever go on Yelp which I do to solely look for restaurants in the area I'm currently in, you will see photos of other items from the previous restaurant.

The most amazing first bite was their prime short rib... but before I get there, let's just start with an apple slaw salad.

yukke.jpg

This is Yukke. Raw beef seasoned lighting topped with an egg yolk and slivers of shiso.

Thick Cut Beef Tongue

Thick cut fatty beef tongue. This was cooked to medium. Perfect with a squeeze of lemon.

Prime Short Rib

For $16.8, this plate of decadence is yours. Season on one side with just a sprinkle of their rosemary course salt, sear for 45 seconds on one side, flip, sear for another 15 seconds. Dip the meat after in their tare sauce for maximum umami sensation. I can eat this whole plate by myself.

Flank Steak

Never thought flank can be so flavorful and tender. This had the right amount of fat where you can still appreciate the beefiness of the cut. This was served with a spicy tare sauce (not spicy).

Thick cut pork belly

Unless you have a large group, I would skip this. But, still very delicious and was served with lettuce, garlic slices, and chili peppers.

Came back twice within the same week and it was everything I hoped it to be. Ate a lot more of other meat dishes, but after a few beers, whose counting anymore?

Bistro Papillote - Costa Mesa

French being my favorite food, there's not much options where I live. I enjoy going to Costa Mesa from time to time and have been discovering little boutique shops here and there. We came across Bistro Papillote in The OC Mix. It was Memorial Day and the place I wanted to try was closed so this was the next runner up.

Their breakfast lunch menu is really straight forward. At Bistro Papillote, you will find escargot, pate, quiches, crepes, croque madame and monsieurs, and sandwiches.

Croque Madame

Croque Madame

Black forest ham with gruyere sandwiched between a soft bread baked till crispy around the edges. A Croque Monsieur is just the same concoction without the egg.

Coddled Eggs

Coddled Eggs

Pomme puree, baby spinach, eggs and baguette sticks. Pommes puree is just French mashed potatoes.

This dish was simple and elegant. I loved the silkiness of the mashed potatoes. I will definitely recreate this at home.

Check them out if you're ever in the area. Their dinner menu also looks great.
